Spirit First, Speech Later
Short Summary of Proverbs 26
Proverbs 26 exposes the patterns and pitfalls of folly. Folly means lack of good sense. It teaches us how to recognize when wisdom is being mishandled, when silence is holy, and when discernment must take the lead. This chapter reminds us that the right words in the wrong spirit are still dangerous. Spiritual maturity means knowing when to speak, when to stay still, and when to walk away entirely. It calls us into rooted awareness, balanced judgment, and divine timing.
Verse Reflections
Proverbs 26:7, 9
“Like the useless legs of one who is lame is a proverb in the mouth of a fool… Like a thornbush in a drunkard’s hand is a proverb in the mouth of a fool.”
This is a warning to be discerning about where wisdom is coming from and how it’s being used. A parable, when misused, becomes a weapon instead of a lesson. Jesus spoke the Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12:15) to warn us not to store treasures without spiritual depth. Many can quote scripture, but not everyone embodies its meaning. Mary and Martha reflect this too. Martha was consumed with performance while Mary chose presence. Both had access to Jesus, but only one received the better portion. Don’t let your mouth outrun your spirit.
Proverbs 26:4-5
“Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you yourself will be just like him. Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes.”
This passage is divine contradiction but with purpose. Sometimes silence is the answer. Other times, correction is mercy. Discernment teaches us which is needed. This is Temperance in action, the spiritual balance between response and restraint. Your soul needs both the Root Chakra to ground you and the Solar Plexus Chakra to give you confidence in your intuitive decision. Let Spirit guide you, not emotion.
Proverbs 26:11
“As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.”
This verse is a call to break cycles. Wisdom has already spoken. If you keep going back, it’s not for clarity, it’s for comfort. Jeliel, the angel of love and wisdom, appears as the Two of Wands. He stands at the edge of decision, ready to choose the divine path. You are not stuck. You are summoned forward. Let the Four of Grain remind you, harvest comes from what is rooted in truth.
📖 Psalm Reflection
Psalm 32:8-9
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding.”
Let your wisdom be guided, not impulsive. You don’t need to prove your discernment, just walk in it.

🧙🏾♀️Tarot Reflection
This devotional holds the energy of deep spiritual alignment and discipline. Temperance calls for sacred balance, especially when you’re unsure how to respond. Mary and Martha reflect the tension between being busy for God and being present with God. The Four of Grain speaks to harvest after discernment, reminding us not to confuse activity with alignment. Jeliel, the angel connected to the Two of Wands, brings divine support and clarity when it’s time to choose. This is a season to choose the path that honors your wisdom, not just your words.
Temperance is a reoccurring theme this week!
It showed up in Proverbs 25 when we were called to feed our enemies and respond with mercy instead of retaliation.
That was the first whisper.
Now in Proverbs 26, Temperance rises again, not through mercy alone but through the restraint of our words, the discernment of our responses, and the strength to walk away from cycles that no longer serve us.
Temperance isn’t just about staying calm. It’s about knowing when to pour, when to pause, and when to preserve your energy. It is Spirit-governed self-control. It’s emotional mastery guided by spiritual clarity.
In Proverbs 25, Temperance asks, “Can you love anyway?”
In Proverbs 26, it asks, “Can you be still when provoked?”
This kind of balance is not passive. It is powerful. It is the wisdom to withhold a response, the courage to exit a conversation, and the maturity to choose peace when pride wants to argue.
That’s Temperance and she’s not just showing up. She’s teaching.
Temperance is defined as moderation in thought, word, and action. It is the spiritual fruit of self-control, the ability to govern your emotions and behaviors through divine guidance.

🤲🏾 Prayer of Reflection and Repentance
Lord God,
I come before You not just for understanding, but for purification. I come not to be seen as wise in the eyes of man, but to be right in Your sight. I thank You for every lesson You’ve allowed, even the ones I had to repeat. Thank You for Your patience when I returned to things You told me to walk away from. Thank You for loving me in my ignorance, and for calling me higher.
I repent for the times I shared Your Word without first submitting to it. I repent for quoting truth I wasn’t living. I repent for every foolish conversation I stayed in too long, and for the pride that kept me from walking away when I should have. Forgive me for thinking I had to prove wisdom instead of carry it quietly. Forgive me for returning to cycles You tried to deliver me from, for entertaining thoughts, habits, and relationships that poisoned my purpose. You warned me, and I still lingered. You whispered, and I still spoke. But today I surrender.
Father, purify my mind. Train my tongue. Strengthen my heart to respond to life with Your wisdom, not my emotions. I don’t want to be one who carries Your truth like a thorn in a drunkard’s hand. I want to be entrusted with wisdom because I reverence You, not because I know the words to say. Teach me how to be silent when silence is sacred. Teach me how to walk away when staying would taint my spirit. Teach me how to speak when it’s You speaking through me.
Your Word in James 3:17 says that “the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” Let that be the measure of every word I speak, every post I write, and every conversation I engage in.
Remind me that as Proverbs 26:11 warns, returning to foolishness is like a dog returning to its vomit. Deliver me from the temptation to go back. Close the doors I keep revisiting. Strip me of the false comfort of what’s familiar and lead me into the safety of what’s sanctified.
I choose You again. I choose wisdom. I choose surrender.
I seal this prayer in humility, repentance, and holy realignment.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
✨ Affirmation
I break cycles by living the wisdom I carry.
